Privacy Policy
Effective Date: April 1, 2026
The Short Version
We don't collect your data. Full stop.
Go for a Walk is built with privacy as a core feature. Your walks, your preferences, and your history stay on your device. We don't have user accounts, we don't run analytics, and we don't have servers storing your information.
What We Don't Collect
Go for a Walk does not collect, store, or transmit any of the following to our servers:
- Your location or GPS coordinates
- Routes you generate or walk
- Personal information (name, email, phone number)
- Device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Usage analytics or behavioral data
- Fitness or health information
- Crash reports or diagnostic logs that identify you
There are no analytics SDKs, no crash reporting tools, and no advertising frameworks embedded in Go for a Walk.
How the App Works
Go for a Walk generates walking routes using a combination of on-device logic and third-party mapping APIs. Here's what happens when you use it:
- Your device's GPS determines your current location locally
- The app sends routing requests to Google Maps APIs (Directions, Elevation, Places) to compute walkable paths, elevation data, and nearby points of interest
- These requests include geographic coordinates (not your name, device ID, or any personal identifier)
- Route scoring, ranking, and all walk history are handled entirely on your device
- No data about your walks is ever sent to Play in Traffic's servers—we don't have any
No Account Required—Ever
Go for a Walk does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal information. There is no login, no profile, and no cloud sync. You open the app, you walk, you're done.
Third-Party Services
Go for a Walk uses Google Maps Platform APIs to generate routes, fetch elevation data, and find nearby points of interest. Apple's MapKit is used to display the map. These services operate under their own privacy policies:
The data sent to Google consists of geographic coordinates needed to compute routes and find nearby places. No personal identifiers, device IDs, or user accounts are included in these requests. Go for a Walk does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or data broker services.
Data Stored on Your Device
Go for a Walk stores the following data locally on your device using iOS's built-in storage:
- Your route preferences and settings
- A cache of recently generated routes (to reduce repeat API calls)
- A cache of nearby points of interest
- Your completed walk history (distance, duration, pace, date)
This data never leaves your device, is protected by your device's built-in security and encryption, is automatically deleted when you uninstall the app, and can be cleared at any time within app settings.
Location Permission
Go for a Walk requests access to your device's location in order to generate routes starting from where you are. When you grant this permission:
- Your location is used to generate walking routes via Google Maps APIs
- Location data is never stored on or transmitted to Play in Traffic's servers
- You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- If you deny location access, you can still enter a starting address manually
HealthKit Integration
If you choose to connect Go for a Walk with Apple HealthKit to personalize route duration estimates to your walking pace:
- This connection is entirely optional
- Data is read locally and never transmitted off your device
- We only access the specific data types you approve (walking speed)
- HealthKit data is never shared with third parties
- You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access
GPX Export
Go for a Walk lets you export routes as GPX files for use in other apps (Strava, Garmin Connect, etc.). When you export a route:
- The GPX file is generated locally on your device
- You control where the file is sent via iOS's standard share sheet
- We have no visibility into what you do with exported files
Children's Privacy
Go for a Walk does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Since we collect no data whatsoever, there is no risk of inadvertently collecting information from minors.
Changes to This Policy
Our commitment is simple: we will never start collecting your data without your explicit, informed consent. If this policy ever changes:
- We will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page
- We will notify you within the app before any change takes effect
- We will never collect data retroactively
