Eyes Up — Random Run Now Speaks Your Turns
You shouldn't have to stare at your phone to find out where to go next. Starting today, you don't.
Random Run now has voice guidance. Every turn on your route gets called out through your headphones — "in 100 metres, turn left onto Sherbrooke" — so you can keep your head up, your pace steady, and your hands free. It's live now in the latest update on the App Store, on both iPhone and Apple Watch.
How it works
Generate a route like you always have. Tap Start. As you approach each turn, Random Run announces it through whatever you're already listening with — AirPods, wired buds, the watch speaker, your car if you're warming up there. The cues duck your music or podcast for a second, deliver the turn, and hand the audio back. Same handoff pattern Apple Maps uses, because runners already know how it feels.
It works the same way on Apple Watch. Leave the phone at home, put in your AirPods, and the watch handles the whole run — route generation, GPS, turn-by-turn, voice. No phone, no screen-staring, no guessing.
Why we built it
Random Run is for variety — a new route every time you head out the door. But "new route" comes with one catch: you don't know it yet. And the moment you stop to glance at the map is the moment your run becomes a navigation task instead of a run.
Voice guidance closes that gap. The screen is still there if you want it, but you don't need it. You can run a route you've never seen before with the same heads-up rhythm as your usual loop. That's the whole point.
Quietly considerate
A few small things we cared about:
- It plays nice with your audio. Music, podcasts, audiobooks — Random Run ducks them briefly and puts them right back.
- It speaks your language. Voice guidance follows your phone or watch's language setting, so French and German runners hear their turns natively, just like the rest of the app.
- It's off when you don't need it. No cues on long straightaways. No filler chatter about your pace or your splits. Just the turns, when they matter.
- Still no account, still no tracking. Voice guidance runs entirely on-device. Nothing about your route, your audio, or your run leaves your phone.
